K-Dot is full of compassion and love, but ever aware of his own (and ours as well) capacity to hate and be full of indifference. Lamar is an around the way dude who recognizes both the upside (family, community, pride, hustler spirit etc.) of Compton and the tremendous challenges that make the city an urban leviathan. He both criticizes and humanizes the hood with an eye toward maintaining his own integrity as a human being who swings on a pendulum between a saint and sinner. Lamar knows that there is a thin line between a pimp and prophet and he gives it to you straight in his trademark cadences.
